planesongroundThousands of passengers are facing disruption as fog forces the cancellation of flights in and out of London.  Both Heathrow Airport and London City Airport in the Docklands have been affected with the Met office issuing further warnings for tonight.

A spokeswoman for Heathrow Airport confirmed that at least 160 flights have been cancelled due to the fog which has enveloped parts of the capital all day.  London City Airport have suspended almost 50 flights upto now and delayed or diverted others.

A statement issued by Heathrow Airport said:

Heathrow has experienced heavy fog.

We are aware of around 80 departing flights that have been cancelled by airlines. Some delays to flights are also occurring so we advise passengers to check with their airlines before travelling.

It warns that disruption could continue late into the evening and that some airlines were re-booking passengers on other flights.  Other airlines are arranging for accommodation and some domestic passengers are being taken to their destinations by other forms of transport including coaches.

The Met office has also issued a severe weather warning citing areas of "dense fog" which are likely to become "more extensive" during the evening.
